What if I told you that the best stress management activity you could focus on was to stop daydreaming and focus your thinking on what’s happening all around you.
Contemporary neuroscience (study of how our brains work) talks about neuro-plasticity and attention density. Neuroplasticity is about how our brains are ever changing throughout our lives. Attention density is where we chose to put our attention and focus.

We used to think past childhood our brains didn’t change very much the reality is almost the complete opposite. Our brains change as a result of our experience all the way through our life.
Attention density is a concept that says we get what we think about. The more we think about problems the more problems we will see. The more we judge ourselves and each other the more faults we see in others and ourselves. Can you se the potential here as a stress management activity?
By the way I enjoyed this video on positive thinking.

These research insights are challenging many traditional clinical psychiatric approaches where the patient is encouraged in reliving the stress, examining it carefully in order to hopefully deconstruct it.
Using a bit of common sense here, if negative thinking caused negative feelings what possible good can come out of over analysing the negative aspects of our lives.
If you are spending a lot of your time seeing problems ahead, rehearsing catastrophes thinking and dwelling on potential problems then you become an expert IN your own problems. Yes you may understand why you do what you do but will you feel any better? Is this dwelling on the issues a good stress management activity?
Perhaps an expert in describing your problems but not an expert at resolving them
So our thinking profoundly affect how our brain changes, how we perceive the world and indeed how we feel about our situation. One of the best stress management activity choices we can make is where we decide to focus our attention. The worries of the past or the anxieties of the future (both of these are using our imagination) what if we focused on NOW and paid attention to what was happening in the outside world right NOW.
I challenge you to try this stress management activity for 7 days and see how you feel. Be aware of your thoughts and every time your thoughts start to sail off on a worry trail just bring your attention back to the NOW. Concentrate on what is happening in your environment, hear the noises, look at the people, be aware of your body and above all be present.
Practice makes perfect but I am willing to bet that the chances are you will start to feel better.
